18-Year-Old Is U.K.'s Youngest Mom of Siamese TwinsThe teenager is due to give birth in two weeks.A team of doctors is on standby to ensure both babies survive. Surgeons are also planning to separate the twins in a complex operation, which is usually done only if both babies have their own heart and spinal chord. It is not known how the twins are joined. Doctors are set to transfer them from Birmingham’s Women’s Hospital to the city’s Children’s Hospital or Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for the risky procedure. Conjoined twins are extremely rare — with just one in 200,000 births affected. The most recent in Britain were Courtney and Natasha Smith, from St. Albans, Herts, who tragically died just weeks after being born in 2002. The first Siamese twins to be successfully separated in the UK were Anna and Barbara Rozycky in 1970. The world’s oldest conjoined siblings were Russian sisters Masha and Dasha Krivoshlappova, who died five years ago at the age of 53. |
